Dry Brushing

Dry Brushing?  It sounds un-fun, but it’s not.

So what is dry brushing anyway?  You may have heard about it and wondered what is that? And why dry brush cause? It sounds downright unnecessarily uncomfortable.

Well, your skin will thank you for this rejuvenating exfoliation.  And it’s not THAT uncomfortable. J/K

DRY BRUSHING – EXFOLIATION

Our skin is constantly turning new skin cells.  However, they don’t always leave the surface so easily.  So our skin can use a little help. It’s best to do this right before you get in the shower.  I do this in the morning and then get into the shower.

If you use any retinol at night, this will help in removing the dry, peeling skin.  So you don’t have to wait for it to flake off. Oh, what we do for bright, youthful skin.  

IIt’sbest to use a small dry brush for your face and then a larger brush for the body.  I have a set that includes both brushes. Start with a dry surface, thus the name dry brushing, and use gentle circular motions with the brush all over your face.

Dry Brushing

For first-timers, the bristles may be a little coarse and firm, so adjust your pressure accordingly.  You do not want to use too much pressure; it’s not necessary. Over time the bristles will soften slightly, and it will feel rather enjoyable.  It took my scrub set about a month to soften to where it didn’t feel so rough, finally. Now it feels better.

DDon’tforget we are exfoliating dry, dead skin, so we need the bristles to be somewhat firm.  This is how we get the brightness back to our skin. Think of it as a more DIY natural at-home microdermabrasion.  Careful not to break the skin; that’s not what we are trying to do here.

DRY BRUSH ENTIRE BODY

After you finish your face, then move on to your body.  Using the body brush perform the same circular motion beginning at your feet and working your way up to the chest/heart area. Be sure to start at the end of the extremities and go up.  That is your feet upward and hands up to the arm.

DDon’tforget your underarms too. IIt’snot the most glam thing to talk about, but it needs attention too. Especially if you use regular deodorant, which can cause buildup, not to mention all the no bueno ingredients, I use natural spray deodorant that I make myself.

I preferred circular motions, in the beginning, on my body because it ddidn’tfeel as rough.  Over time, with the bristles softening slightly, I used up and down motions on my arm and legs.  Still, use circular on the abdomen and chest. Either way, you get the benefits.

The brush set I use comes with the handle extender so you can get your back or hard-to-reach places.  Sometimes I get in a hurry and skip my back cause I have to add the handle attachment to my brush. But do your best to get all areas; if not, get it the next day.

This is an easy natural way to exfoliate.  Just apply the right amount of pressure to exfoliate without making it uncomfortable for yourself.  Once you are done, hop in the shower and go through your everyday routine.

BENEFITS

Exfoliation, of course, is the most noticeable benefit.  It may take a few days or even a week to see real results. It depends if you are a regular exfoliator or not. Your skin will start to have a brighter look.

Lymphatic drainage, dry brushing stimulate your lymphatic system, which aids in detox. Important to brush strokes towards your heart. Dry brush your arms in an upward motion. Your legs from your ankles to the top of your legs. Your abdomen upwards to your heart.

Reduces cellulite.  However, having a background in the Plastic/Cosmetic Surgery field, I also know there isn’t a remedy or cure for this. However, there are many claims and products out there. Most plump the skin to appear as though the cellulite has diminished.  For most of us, this is better than nothing. One product I love and is a great complement to dry brushing is the FasciaBlaster. Ashley Black has a great product, and I use it every day after dry brushing.

Deep cleaning for your pores removes dirt and helps to minimize pores.

Trust me, don’t knock it till you try it.  Once you start this routine, you will likely get so used to your skin feeling softer and cleaner that you will not miss a day.  We all have different results as no two people are the same. Do what works best for you.
