Empaths – 5 Ways to Protect Your Energy

I encourage you to read Empath – Are You One here? If you haven’t yet.  This will give you a better sense of what an Empath is if you are one and why protecting/shielding yourself is necessary.  

There are more than 5, but these 5, in particular, have worked for me.  Nothing is ever one size fits all; no two people or empaths are the same; therefore, what works for you may not work well for another.

Having your emotions and energy drained, or worse, being overwhelmed with other people’s feelings or emotions, is exhausting in and of itself.  So we need to protect/shield ourselves from not just the energy vampires but everyone’s negative energy.

So how can you do that?  Try some of the following or find other ways that work for you to keep that negative energy at bay.

Empaths 5 Ways to Protect Your Energy

1. Crystals

Now I know you may be like what, seriously? Do those even work? I was skeptical, too, at first.  Then I tried one, and it made a difference, especially at the beginning when I was trying to find what worked.  You can carry these with you to protect yourself in your pant pocket, purse, or coat pocket. Where ever you can.  You can easily hide them.

Black Tourmaline (this is what I use) repels negative energy and sends that stuff back to the sender, where it belongs! I wear yoga pants most days and place this crystal in the tiny pocket in the waistband. This is by far my favorite way to protect my energy.

Amethyst, Malachite Hematite are other options.  Do your research and find the one that speaks to you.  That is how I selected Black Tourmaline. Follow your intuition.

2. Meditation

Meditation plays a significant role in managing the emotional stress and weight of absorbing other people’s energy. It allows you to center yourself and reconnect with your energy. This is very important to do as an Empath.

Clearing your energy, center yourself, and ask spirit guides to help clear any unwanted negative energy.  Both low-lying energy fields and negativity. This should bring you into a more calm and relaxed state while simultaneously releasing the negative energy you may have collected.

Try different types of meditation and find the one that speaks to you.

3. Smudge/Sage

You can smudge your person and/or space.  I do this daily for both. Smudge my home and also myself upon awakening. (If you would like an alternative to burning sage, try this spray. You’ll love the smell!) Make it part of your routine every morning, and it becomes second nature.

Repeat if you start feeling bogged down with heavy energy. I always feel an immediate lifting of this energy when it is removed.  That is how I know it wasn’t my energy. If you’re not familiar with smudging, read about it here.

4. Remove Toxic Energy Vampires

If possible, decide if you need to remove people from your life that are sucking your energy, also known as energy vampires.  This may not always be possible; if not, try to limit direct interaction with them. Also, use these other techniques to help you.

Empaths feel the toxic negativity of these energy vampires even more draining and exhausting than non-sensitive people. It is quite possible that if you haven’t been protecting your energy from these toxic people, you are carrying their negative energy with you, causing you to feel even more worn down emotionally.

If you are new to protecting techniques, it may be necessary to cleanse/smudge or remove these energies from your energy field multiple times. Especially if you’re just starting this practice, try doing these techniques a few times over, if needed.

5. Shielding

You can shield and/or allow the energy to pass through you.  When I first realized I was an Empath, I read all about shielding.  So I tried it but found that it took more energy, at least for me, than I had to give.

To shield you, visualize a white light surrounding you like a bubble with you inside. You can visualize the negative energy bouncing off this shield or bubble.

To do this constantly when you are out or at work is very hard. Now, what works is to acknowledge the feeling and allow it to pass through me, and send it back to the sender.  

I will say that I am not 100% on this every time, so I still have energy that stays with me. So I smudge and release it daily.

Protecting Yourself As An Empath

These again are by no means the only way to shield yourself from absorbing other people’s energy.  These are the five that I have done and have worked for me. Be sure to listen to your intuition and try what speaks to you first. Then go from there.

Developing your Empath abilities takes time and practice. It has taken me some time to be able to decipher my feelings from someone else’s. It takes practice to stop and center yourself and ask the question, “Is this my feelings/energy, or is this some else?” Once you can tell the energy doesn’t belong to you, you can smudge yourself to cleanse the energy.

It’s best to be proactive in protecting your Empathic energy rather than reactive.

It’s a good habit to start your day by shielding yourself. Especially when you know you’ll be encountering energy vampires or other situations where you may be inundated with energy—for instance, going to the grocery store, the mall, or high traffic places.

UPDATE 11/16/21

I’m reading a book about spirit guides, and I came across a great exercise for Empaths. If you’re struggling with determining your energy from others, you can try this.

First, cleanse your energy, as mentioned above. Then sit quietly in meditation style and focus on your energy. Feel what it is like, how fast or slow your vibration is, does it have a color, how does it make you feel. Do this daily until you can tell without a doubt what your energy feels like.

Once you have this down, you will be further able to decipher when you carry someone else’s energy. If you get really intuned, you can even tell when particular energy is a specific person. For instance, I can tell by the weight or heaviness of particular energy when it’s my husband. I can also feel my youngest daughter’s energy as it vibrates really fast, like a hummingbird.
